Size matters?

We were fairly certain that Carson is bigger than Braden was at two months old, but we were wrong. Despite being born bigger than his brother, Carson is only 13 lbs 13 oz. and 23.75 inches compared to 15 lbs 2 oz and 24.5 inches for Braden at two months, as we learned at Carson’s recent check-up.

Maybe it’s because Carson poops so much that he hasn’t gained as much weight? That doesn’t explain the height differential, though. Still, we have a feeling Carson will be taller someday.

Kristin returns to work next week, with two straight weeks of night shifts. We’re thankful that our parents can watch both kids for us during the day.

As mentioned, the “Bringing up Bebe” book has been a life-changer. We’ve now had three nights that Carson didn’t get up! That didn’t happen for several months with Braden.

Back to work

Kristin returned to work yesterday. It was difficult not only because she hadn’t been at work since late January, but also because she was away from the baby for the longest time yet (eight hours). Still, she said it was like nothing changed as she was extremely busy, which she said was good because it kept her mind off of being away from Braden.

For those who are wondering, we are very fortunate to have our moms take care of Braden while we’re at work. Kristin developed a schedule of who’s watching Braden when.

Braden now can sleep at least six hours straight on a consistent basis. Last night, for example, he slept from 8:45 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. He then woke up again at 5:30 a.m., but then fell asleep on his own (that rarely happens).

Work trips

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. Brian was in Calgary Sunday through Thursday for work. Brian’s mom came on Monday, Kristin’s sister and her husband came on Tuesday and Kristin’s parents came on Wednesday to help out. (THANKS!)

Brian will be traveling again, this time to Las Vegas Sunday through Wednesday for work. He usually doesn’t travel this much–it just happens to be taking place around the same time.

Big congratulations to our friends, Nathan and Ruth Howard, for the birth of their daughter, Belen, on Monday, March 30. Brian has already made the joke the Braden and Belen could date some day.

***

Braden has now cracked the four-hour mark for continuous sleep, accomplishing this on Wednesday night and nearly duplicating it on Thursday. This is extremely exciting for us.

We’ll have Episode 7 of “Brian and Kristin Plus One” soon!

Bath time

It was such a nice day today (mid-50s for those not living in the Madison area) that Kristin took Braden to visit Brian at his office in the afternoon. That was a fun little trip, and they returned home just in time for another feeding.

Usually Braden falls asleep after he eats, but once in a while he’ll stay awake. After his 8 p.m. “dinner,” Braden stayed up so we decided to give him a (sponge) bath.

(For you “Seinfeld” fans out there, we were hoping it would be 6 p.m. “Hey Scott, it’s six o’clock. Time for your sponge bath.”)

As expected, Braden cried a bit because he hates being naked. We have captured this on film, and you will be able to watch part of it in Episode 5 (Episode 4 will be out shortly).

Eating machine; back to work

February 9th, 2009

Braden eats non-stop! Before, we were feeding him breast milk, then half a bottle of formula (the latter to help get rid of his mild jaundice). Now, he breast feeds, has the formula (some times the whole bottle), then has another round of breast milk.

The good news is that his bilirubin levels have finally declined. The bad news is that feeding him takes 1.5 hours or longer. After his next appointment (Wednesday), we are hoping he cuts back to just one round of breast milk, and that’s it. We are already worried how much he will eat when he becomes a teen.

Brian went back to work today. His bosses have been very nice and accommodate his needs (e.g. if he has to run home). However, Brian is continuing to work a lot from home when Braden sleeps, so he’s not falling behind.

Despite a few hours’ sleep, Brian still was alert and functional at work. We’ll see how long that lasts!
